Ephesians

Today I read through the book of Ephesians.

  1. I noted the “both” in 2:14–22 and wondered to whom it referred. So I did a quick search for a devotional that discussed this. Of course! It is the Uncircumcised and the Circumcised, the Jews and the Gentiles.
  2.  In 3:8–13, I begin to marvel at the change in Paul. I had to pause and think about Paul, who is the former Saul, who persecuted Christians. How can a person be so changed! How can that person be the one who writes the clear teachings of the Father? This is so strong! It emphasizes to me not be casual about my walk with God. My change was not dramatic—nothing like Paul’s—but I should be every bit as grateful to God and every bit as purposed in my daily walk.
  3. Chapter 3:14–19 is a lovely hope. This is a hope for me. Paul bowed the knee to the Father, asking Him to grant these things to the Ephesian believers.
  4. It is clear that my relationship with Christ should be demonstrated in my life (4:17–24). I should not walk in the old ways. I should not walk as “the rest of the Gentiles walk.” It is all described here. Paul describes the change that is to take place because we have “heard Him and have been taught by Him.”
  5. What’s important? Paul points out, in 4:25–32, things that seem pretty small when compared to Paul’s former life. For all he did in persecuting Christians, you would think that he would immediately point out “greater sins.” Instead, he talks basic changes that should be seen in the one who is changed by Christ:
    •  no more lying, but speak the truth
    •  no more stealing, but work instead to be able to give
    • no more corrupt words. but words that edify in order to give grace
    • no more bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, or evil speaking, but be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another
